Ephesians 6:14a, 17
Stand firm.......... Take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.

Ephesians 4:3
3: Make every effort to keep the unity of the Spirit through the bond of peace.

The idea of unity is something that most people would agree on. We understand that unity has to do with multiple parts being one, and it can be for most any purpose. What I want us to consider for a minute is not what unity is, but how is it achieved. Many consider the Church to lack unity because there are so many different denominations each having slightly different viewpoints on things they consider to be the most important aspects of their faith. I have friends who think that if you are not completely focused on missions then you are not "with them". Some think that if you prefer one style of worship or music then you are not in unity with those who prefer another. But what is it the Bible says causes Christians to be unified? Ephesians 4:3 says that unity occurs at a spiritual level and it is maintained by being at peace with one another. In other words, we do not physically need to be together or doing the kinds of things in order to have unity. We can and should choose to have the same spiritual goals as other (all) Christians. We should all want to see people saved, healed, delivered, restored, blessed and obedient to God and His Word so that we are useful to Him. I can be on the other side of the world, worshipping in a completely different style and be completely unified in the spirit with other Christians. I choose to make these things my goal because of what Jesus has done for me. I choose to be unified even if I never see the people I am unified with.

Colossians 3:14
14: And over all these virtues put on love, which binds them all together in perfect unity.

Here we see that love binds us together in perfect unity. Of course God's love is perfect and it is only when we have God's type of love present (which we are commanded to do - 1 John 3:10) in our lives that we can have unity with others. The important thing to note is that we choose to love. If we choose to love and love binds us together in perfect unity then we choose to be unified. Unity has nothing to do with being physically together. I have been in many rooms full of people that said they were meeting for the same purpose but there was NO UNITY. They all had their own agendas and ideas of the way they thought things should be done. They might have all be in close physical proximity, but there was no unity.

Ephesians 4:13
13: until we all reach unity in the faith and in the knowledge of the Son of God and become mature, attaining to the whole measure of the fullness of Christ.

Paul writes the Ephesians about unity of faith and knowledge of the Son of God, this allows us to be mature and attain everything Jesus died to purchase for us. Once again this has nothing to do with physical closeness. The truth is that many extremely large churches are more unified that small ones that can fit in one room together. The large churches have grown and continue to grow because they have unity of their faith. This means they are working towards the same goal. Once again, this means seeing people saved, healed, delivered, restored, blessed and obedient to God and His Word so that we are useful to Him. They may be motivated and gifted to reach those goals in many different ways and they never need to see or speak to each other. Paul goes on to say, this allows them to become mature and attain all of those wonderful things they are unified around as their goals.

There are many small churches of 12 or 15 people. They all fit neatly together in one room and they are quite unified............ they ran off all of the people they disagreed with!
