"My message and my preaching were not with wise and persuasive words, but with a demonstration of the Spirit's power,
so that your faith might not rest on men's wisdom, but on God's power."

Ephesians 6:14a, 17
Stand firm.......... Take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.

1 Thessalonians 4:11
11: Make it your ambition to lead a quiet life, to mind your own business and to work with your hands, just as we told you,

How many of us can say we lead a quiet life? Most people I know are extremely busy and can't get off of the treadmill of life. It is not that we want more to do than we have time for, it just seems to build up and before we know it we are behind the game and we can never catch up. When most people enter adulthood and start raising a family they think they will be able to control the busyness of life if they do not actively choose to be busy. WRONG! According to Paul writing to the Church at Thessalonica you have to actively make an effort to not loose the peaceful life you desire. Paul says, "make it your ambition to lead a quiet life". Allow me to use a computer term to describe the point I want to make. Many believe that a "quiet life" is the "default setting" of life and it will stay that way automatically as long as we do not choose to be busy. Paul says that you have to actively work at maintaining a quiet life. My own experience and the lives of the many families I have pastored over the last twenty plus years would confirm Paul's assertion. We do not have to do anything in order to end up with a busy hectic life. If you do not actively resist the busyness of life, LIFE WILL RUN OVER YOU!

So how do we keep life from running over us? Let's talk prioritization. Many people think that setting priorities means, for example, that there are six things they really want to do so they will force them into their schedules. Prioritization really means there may be six things you want to do but you understand that in order to maintain your sanity you can only realistically do two. Choose the two that will be the most beneficial to you and do only those two activities.

Matthew 5:37
37: Simply let your 'Yes' be 'Yes,' and your 'No,' 'No'; anything beyond this comes from the evil one.

Along with truly setting priorities learning to simply say yes or no and meaning it will go a long way towards maintaining a quiet life. When someone ask us to do something we usually know immediately if we want to do it or if we have time to do it. Our hesitation comes from trying to figure out if we can squeeze it in so that we don't upset the person asking or can we do it and still maintain our sanity. You should not feel like you have to justify your answer. It is none of that persons business. They asked and you answered. When you start giving answers based on anything other than the truth of what you want to do or can do you are not being honest and that would fall into the realm of the "evil one", it is not honest.

Let me use this classic example to illustrate my previous point. Almost every mom has been called at 8 o'clock at night and asked if they can provide 5 dozen cupcakes by tomorrow morning. The answer in your heart to such a question is usually going to be NO even though it usually comes out yes. I am not saying to be mean in your answer but there is nothing wrong with answering no and making a point for future reference. You might want to tell the person asking that you cannot do what is asked this time but if the need comes up in the future and they will let you know three days prior you would be happy to help.

Proverbs 21:5
5: Careful planning puts you ahead in the long run; hurry and scurry puts you further behind.
(The Message Translation)

There are many things you can do in order to maintain a quiet life but let me end with this one. It ties into my previous example, plan ahead. I know that many think planning takes more time and effort. Not so. If the person needing 5 dozen cupcakes had called 3 days in advance they would not have been making 10 phone calls until late at night trying to find someone to stay up half the night baking. I am always stressing to those involved in ministries at the church I pastor to call around rather than drive around, make a check list, give others that need to know a heads up rather than waiting. Take care of things as soon as they come up rather than putting them off. All of this will help minimize the stress and busyness that is waiting to overwhelm each on of us. Make it your ambition to lead a quiet life, OR ELSE!
