Ephesians 6:14a, 17
Stand firm.......... Take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.

Acts 2:14-21
14: Then Peter stood up with the Eleven, raised his voice and addressed the crowd: "Fellow Jews and all of you who live in Jerusalem, let me explain this to you; listen carefully to what I say.
15: These men are not drunk, as you suppose. It's only nine in the morning!
16: No, this is what was spoken by the prophet Joel:
17: "'In the last days, God says, I will pour out my Spirit on all people. Your sons and daughters will prophesy, your young men will see visions, your old men will dream dreams.
18: Even on my servants, both men and women, I will pour out my Spirit in those days, and they will prophesy.
19: I will show wonders in the heaven above and signs on the earth below, blood and fire and billows of smoke.
20: The sun will be turned to darkness and the moon to blood before the coming of the great and glorious day of the Lord.
21: And everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.

As a Christian we are currently a part of what is known as the New Testament Church. While this is common knowledge many do not know what marks the time frame of this current Church Age or what it's characteristics are. This passage in the Book of Acts records the events on the day of Pentecost which was 50 days after Jesus' crucifixion because Jesus was crucified on Passover. On the day of Pentecost the Holy Spirit baptized those apostles/disciples that were in a house in Jerusalem. This caused such a commotion that it drew Jews from other nations that were in Jerusalem at the time to the house to see what was taking place. Acts 2:14-21 is a portion of Peter's explanation to those that gathered. In his explanation he establishes a time frame for the existence of the New Testament Church. Peter says on this day, what Joel prophesied has begun. He then quotes Joel's prophecy and by doing so he describes what would take place so that it would be known the prophecy was being fulfilled. In doing this he also marks the beginning of a time period known as "the last days" and the start of the New Testament Church Age marked by God pouring out His Spirit. The really interesting part of this passage however is something that many people miss. Peter also defines how long the New Testament Church would operate under this outpouring of God's Spirit. The New Testament Church will exist until the signs that mark, "the coming of the great and glorious day of the Lord". The signs noted by Peter match the same signs given by Jesus when he was asked by His disciples what the sign of His coming would be and when the age would end. This can be found in Matthew 24 and Jesus' answer parallels what Peter says in Acts 2:19-21. There is also a parallel found in Revelation 6 at the opening of the sixth seal which immediately precedes the coming of the Lord. So what we see is that time frame for the New Testament Church to be in operation started on the day of Pentecost and ends at the return of Jesus. How the New Testament Church is to operate is under the outpouring of God's Spirit which we are told in Acts 1:8 would bring power to those that received it.

The Book of Acts is the model for the New Testament Church. These are the acts that the church should be carrying out today in Jesus name. How do I know this? Because we are within the time frame Peter laid out for the existence of the New Testament Church. I am sure that none of us needs to be biblical scholars to realize that the Church today bears little resemblance to the Church we see in the Book of Acts. If I have to decide if the failure to operate like the Church in the Book of Acts is or failure or God's I feel confident saying, "it's not God's problem".
