Ephesians 6:14a, 17
Stand firm.......... Take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.

1 John 4:19-21
19: We love because he first loved us.
20: If anyone says, "I love God," yet hates his brother, he is a liar. For anyone who does not love his brother, whom he has seen, cannot love God, whom he has not seen.
21: And he has given us this command: Whoever loves God must also love his brother.

Tonight in our Bible Study class we discussed the idea that if we are indeed Christians, born-again by a supernatural rebirth brought about by God's Spirit transforming us in our hearts and minds, then shouldn't we expect to see certain godly characteristics in our lives. Of course this always generates debate over whether or not a person can be saved and still disobedient when it comes to living godly lives or must our lives reflect God's qualities demonstrating that we have in fact been born-again. Based on 1 John 4:19-21 let me ask you a question this way. Do you think a person can be saved and spend eternity in heaven communing with and worshipping God if you do not love God? I don't see how that would be possible since our relationship with God is based in love. We understand that Jesus sacrificed His life for ours out of love for us and we love Him in return because He first loved us. Also, loving God and our neighbors as ourselves are the two greatest commandments and all of the law is fulfilled when we do these two things. Love is the greatest and most important thing we do everything in God's Kingdom is to be motivated by love. 1 Corinthians 13 says that anything we do is meaningless if we do not have love.

Those that argue that all we need to do is believe in Jesus and we will not perish but have everlasting life (John 3:16) miss the point that when we believe in Jesus for our salvation we are loving Him because of the saving love He showed for us. When we believe in Jesus we do not simply believe that He died for our sins, we believe IN Him! We believe who He is, what He did, what He stands for, what He came to accomplish, the ministry that He is the head of and that we now share in that ministry. We believe or embrace everything that Jesus is and what He came to do. Jesus was the greatest servant the world has ever known and it was motivated by love and now we are to serve others in the love of Jesus that has been poured out into our hearts (Romans 5:5).

So maybe we should talk more about love being the basis of our salvation than belief. If it is impossible to enter heaven unless we love God and that love is demonstrated by us loving others the way God does, some that consider themselves Christians might have a problem. Wake up people. It is impossible to love God if you hate a brother or sister. I know far too many people that call themselves Christians that hate others sitting in the same sanctuary with them singing praise songs to God. Uh oh!

2 John 6
6: And this is love: that we walk in obedience to his commands. As you have heard from the beginning, his command is that you walk in love.

Love! It's not an option.
