Ephesians 6:14a, 17
Stand firm.......... Take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.

1 Corinthians 13:1-8a
1: If I speak in the tongues of men and of angels, but have not love, I am only a resounding gong or a clanging cymbal.
2: If I have the gift of prophecy and can fathom all mysteries and all knowledge, and if I have a faith that can move mountains, but have not love, I am nothing.
3: If I give all I possess to the poor and surrender my body to the flames, but have not love, I gain nothing.
4: Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud.
5: It is not rude, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs.
6: Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth.
7: It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres.
8: Love never fails.....

Recently I have written several times concerning the fact that the Bible says obedience to God's commands equals love for Him. Most people hear the word love and immediately have an idea of what it means to them and then not give it a lot more thought. If you are like me though when you read something like this you ask yourself, "if love for God is to obey His commands, what is love and why is it so important"? 1 Corinthians 13 tells us what love is from God's viewpoint. I have believed that God has helped me grow a great deal in my ability to love and I am doing really well at this point in my life, then I recently re-read this passage. I was doing pretty well while I was going through all of the things love does not do but then I got the things love is supposed to do. My sense of self satisfaction began to diminish as I read through verse 7. I do not always protect because I tell myself that everyone needs to take care of themselves. I certainly have learned not to trust people and usually don't hold out much hope that they will be the kind of people God wants them to be.

You might be wondering, does God really wants us to love people that have nothing lovable about them. It might help us to understand what God means by loving others. When God tells us to love He is not saying we have to love the despicable actions of people that that have no respect or concern for others, people that are rude and calloused or just plain mean. He is not even saying we need to like those people or spend time in their company. What He is saying is that we should be concerned about the eternal destination. While there are people that I do not like or agree with there is no one I want to see spend eternity in hell. There are very few people in the world who live their lives with the intention of being a terrible person. There is a great deal more that goes into why individuals are the way they are and why they do the things they do but we do not have enough time or space to go into that so we will cut to the bottom line:

Ephesians 6:12
12: For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms.

No matter how much a person is the direct opposite of everything I believe is good and right, I would always take the opportunity to share Jesus with them if I was given the chance. If you can't stand the person, guess what, who do you think has a better chance of fixing them, you or Jesus. There is nothing that surrendering your life to Jesus can't fix.

Why is loving others so important to God. We are called to reflect the nature of God to others. Guess what, GOD IS LOVE! (1 John 4:8) Our ability to love others reveals the truth of our hearts. Matthew 5:46 teaches us that loving those that love us is not big deal. If our hearts cannot understand what it means for a person to be eternally separated from God and that each of us has deserves that same punishment except for the forgiveness we have received by Jesus' sacrifice then we still have the same old heart of stone and have not been born again. How we react to those people that are not lovable tells God whether or not we truly understand our sin and the price paid by Jesus for our forgiveness.

Luke 2:34-35a
34: Then Simeon blessed them and said to Mary, his mother: "This child is destined to cause the falling and rising of many in Israel, and to be a sign that will be spoken against,
35: so that the thoughts of many hearts will be revealed......

Hebrews 4:12-13
12: For the word of God is living and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart.
13: Nothing in all creation is hidden from God's sight. Everything is uncovered and laid bare before the eyes of him to whom we must give account.

God is concerned about the condition of our hearts. Our reaction to Jesus reveals our true hearts. Our willingness to submit to the authority of God's Word reveals our hearts. It is not possible to hide our heart condition from God to whom we will all give an account.
