Ephesians 6:14a, 17
Stand firm.......... Take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.

James 1:6-8
6: But when he asks, he must believe and not doubt, because he who doubts is like a wave of the sea, blown and tossed by the wind.
7: That man should not think he will receive anything from the Lord;
8: he is a double-minded man, unstable in all he does.

I think this passage challenges all of us. We want and need God to hear our prayers and yet we wonder if God really hears us. God says when we ask we must believe and not doubt. Now before I go any further I know that you are thinking, "it's hard not to doubt, I have prayed before and not seen the answers". I get that but let's keep an open mind for a few minutes and see if there is something we can learn that will help.

James 4:3
3: When you ask, you do not receive, because you ask with wrong motives

I think we can all admit that sometimes our motives are not what they should be when we pray to God.

2 Peter 3:8-9
8: But do not forget this one thing, dear friends: With the Lord a day is like a thousand years, and a thousand years are like a day.
9: The Lord is not slow in keeping his promise, as some understand slowness.

God's timing is not always the same as ours.

Daniel 10:12-13
12: Then he continued, "Do not be afraid, Daniel. Since the first day that you set your mind to gain understanding and to humble yourself before your God, your words were heard, and I have come in response to them.
13: But the prince of the Persian kingdom resisted me twenty-one days. Then Michael, one of the chief princes, came to help me, because I was detained there with the king of Persia.

This passage speaks of spiritual warfare. The Prince of Persia was a demonic spirit sent by Satan to keep God's answer to Daniel from getting through. I know this is a very rarely taught on subject but the bible is full of scripture dealing with spiritual warfare. If you are interested in learning more, let me know and I will recommend some material.

James 4:7-8
7: Submit yourselves, then, to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.
8: Come near to God and he will come near to you. Wash your hands, you sinners, and purify your hearts, you double-minded

Even if we are not double-minded when it comes to our prayer maybe we are double minded in other areas of our lives. James 4:7-8 is saying when you want to overcome Satan's attacks but you don't want to submit to God it is not going to work. You can't have it both ways. We are either all in for God or we are not onboard at all.

James 4:4
4: You adulterous people, don't you know that friendship with the world is hatred toward God? Anyone who chooses to be a friend of the world becomes an enemy of God.

If trying to live by worldly standards and saying we are submitted to God is actually hatred towards God, how many of our prayers do we think are going to be answered. This is probably number 1 or 2 on the list of reasons prayers are not answered.

There are other reasons we can learn from scripture as to why our prayers are not always answered as we think they should be. The one thing I know for sure is that may job is to believe and not doubt, not to be double-minded. If I am, I should not think that I will receive anything from the Lord.

Hebrews 11:6
6: And without faith it is impossible to please God, because anyone who comes to him must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who earnestly seek him.
